Knowing the truth of this news, it is interesting to see how it has evolved into fake news. Yes, this was originally reported accurately, however it evolved into a viral sensation the next day coining the phrase I previously mentioned. Digging into this evolution of news, it is interesting to see how this turned into fake news.
I have seen tweets, articles, posts and so on about the question of Animal Sentience. As an animal lover this news caught my eye. As I have viewed how this news has progressed it has evolved into something that I would like to share with everyone.
The statement that became viral: is that animals "can no longer feel pain" This is such an easy headline, and something that many many animal lovers and artists would absolutely refute.
Like any fake news this still has a kernel of truth in it. The Business Insider gives very good coverage over this news. it states that:
"The government had rejected a suggestion that it copy a passage about animal sentience in EU legislation (title II, article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty) — but maintained that it would use a different legal means to afford animals the same protections."
1. Adding a hyperbolic headline, an outraged tone, and a personal attack on Michael Gove
2. Fake news added: Re-framing the decision not to accept the amendment as a "vote to say animals cannot longer feel pain or emotions"3. This fake news suggests that the government was actively legislating to deny animals their rights

These three steps that turned this news into fake news are so simple to achieve with the use of the internet, social media, and the lack of knowledge and journalistic integrity. Now that we know the real story and how it became fake news it is interesting to see how social media has caught onto it. There are numerous meme and tweets. This is actually what lead me to look deeper into this story. Social media is the driving force behind the spread of fake news. This incorrect informational covering this story was spread within a night.
It's amazing how just tweaking or altering a story in three ways can turn it into something it's not. I remember seeing this article popping up on my Facebook News Feed and I thought that it was fake news. I'm happy to know I was right. Check out my article on if social media can be trusted at our new source. You were right in digging deeper and doing your homework. It's almost as if no news source can be trusted anymore without researching a little more. Great post! And as my dog is laying asleep on my lap, they can feel pain and emotions. She's chasing something in her dreams I'm sure.
