Facebook: Taking a Stand

This is astonishing to me, the fact that Russian-based agents could have impacted as many as 126 millions Americans with content uploaded during the election brings fake news to a new level.  In a blog post Facebook said; "It is important to understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 election"  Following the 2016 election Zuckerberg and many other people realized the enormous impact social media, in particularly Facebook; had on the out come of the election. This was an unintended consequence of the evolution of mass media and the availability of mass media.  Zuckerberg has been trying to make improvements to the programming of his site so his users are not exposed to fake news.  Zuckerberg Mark Zuckerberg is trying to make changes to social media, in particularly to his site Facebook, He is to first social media actor that is trying to make a real change. The spread of fake news throu...

This Weeks Biggest News Story Didn't Happen?

Knowing the truth of this news, it is interesting to see how it has evolved into fake news. Yes, this was originally reported accurately, however it evolved into a viral sensation the next day coining the phrase I previously mentioned. Digging into this evolution of news, it is interesting to see how this turned into fake news.  I have seen tweets, articles, posts and so on about the question of Animal Sentience. As an animal lover this news caught my eye. As I have viewed how this news has progressed it has evolved into something that I would like to share with everyone. The statement that became viral: is that animals "can no longer feel pain" This is such an easy headline, and something that many many animal lovers and artists would absolutely refute. Like any fake news this still has a kernel of truth in it. The  Business Insider  gives very good coverage over this news. it states that: "The government had rejected a suggestion that it copy a passage ab...

Fake News and the Asian Tour

Donald Trump is on his Asian Tour, this has lead to a great deal of media coverage. the fact that trump is on this 12-day tour as not stopped is accusations of fake news coverage by any means. A lot of the news coverage and his responses are involving Putin and Trumps relationship with Russia. The article from Deadline  states that "once again, he blasted “fake news media” for criticizing his relationship with Putin and insisted that a relationship with Russia would be a “good thing.” Trump is adamant that relations with Russia are a good thing, and that this can solve all kinds of terrorism. It is no surprise that a big event like the Asian tour would bring about coverage and of course fake news. It seems like fake news follows Trump and he does not hesitate to discuss it over twitter. Trump discusses a lot of controversial topics about fake news on Twitter, after all fake news is fueled through social media.  Trump does not hesitate to use this discussion of Russia to discu...

Fake News Turning Small Town Upside Down

Twin falls Idaho FAKE NEWS ruins town This weeks blog post is concerning a New York Times post   about how fake news Turns a small city in Idaho upside down, and how because of this the town still has not recovered. In the small town of Twin Falls Idaho, news was generally boring. This is until there was talk about Islamic refugees settling in this small town, and news and talked turned south. These rumors and biases were the seed that lead to fake news. This sounds familiar right? Fake news being spread by the talk and biases of the public. This incident in Idaho is a small scale incident of what happens all over the country every single day! In Twin Falls Idaho there was an alleged incident concerning a juvenile sex scandal concerning two two refugee boys and a little girl. The reports and talk of this case were sealed because it involved minors, however this did not stop people from talking. There were Facebook groups and reports acting like they knew about the incident. ...

Fake News Circulating After the Las Vegas Shooting

Google and facebook commented on this issue pledging to stop fake news. They said that their algorithms should have stopped this publishing of fake news before it started. LA Times goes through many headlines about fake news, in they article concerning Google and Facebook they state that.  "Accuracy matters in the moments after a tragedy. Facts can help catch the suspects, save lives and prevent a panic. But in the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday, the world’s two biggest gateways for information, Google and Facebook, did nothing to quell criticism that they amplify fake news" This is an important quote and it is very true. Fake news makes hard times or tragic times worse. TI scared people and makes the people not know what to believe. this is the worst thing that can happen. Everyone and every site needs to follow the lead of Google and Facebook. The only thing we can do it try to combat fake news. This is what the American Democracy need...

Fake News: The President

Mass media is centered around social media. In result since around the 2006 election social media sites have impacted politics in numerous ways. President Trump uses twitter in particular as a way to get his opinions out to the wold.  Trump recently tweeted this out, in regard to claims of fake news surrounding him and his presidency.  The Hill  published a very enlightening article covering this tweet. Fake News is a new phrase and it seems to have surrounded President Trump. This is leaving the public confused. It is very arguable that this is hurting the American Democracy. Media is supposed to inform the public and the only thing it is doing is confusing the public.  President Trump states that the media has lost credibility, with almost half the voters thinking that media makes up stories about him.  The Hill quotes Trump saying:  "Network news has become so partisan, distorted and fake that licenses must be challenged and, if appropr...

Fake News: The President

President has brought the term of "fake news" into the light even more than it previously was. He is known for claiming that CNN is notorious for fake news, which I discussed in my previous blog. HE has commented and twetted on the fact the CNN is about fake news.     This is an example of how far this has gone. CNN and trump have a feud that is centered around fake news. Some people question if fake news is a term that is a new fad surrounding the news. It is no secret that the media has been harder on President Trump than it has been on any other president.  Is this because of fake news? Does the lack of credibility of news confuse people into not knowing what to believe? It seems that Trump blames the majority of the negative stigma on fake news surrounding his presidency.  This is still debatable, because fake news is such a new term. WE have not caught up to what exactly fake news it, or how to handle it. However, this has not stopped President...

Fake News: Media Debates

As my blog thus far has shown, fake news is an issue in todays media. However there are debates about this term and what comes along with it. Fake news is till in the beginning stages, and we are still figuring how to control it, or if it is really a problem. In  The Hill  there is a very heated debate between Gorka, who is sided with Trump, and CNN"s Anderson Cooper. This debate is concerning fake news, the content of this article really highlights the main points and problems that come along with fake news. Gorka is accusing CNN's Cooper of producing fake news in order to get more views. Gorka states that he "knows that they was sensational coverage for their ratings so their corporate sponsors and owners will have more money, but that' s not media, that's not reportage, it's just fake news." This quote summarizes one of the main problems with media these days and fake news. Media and reporters do not report for the truth, or the real story, they rep...

Fake News: Debate

Fake news is a new term that was coined around the 2016 election. This is the time that social media stuck its foot into the political world and created controversy that we are still debating today. There are so many questions that float around about fake news, because it is not something that we have had to time to grasp the concept of much less control. Media and the internet are growing faster than the law can follow, it hard to know what impacts fake news has without large studies on it. There are debates that discuss if fake news is a thing, and if it really has any impact on media or if it is just a phrase that is floating around media outlets. This site Debating Matters  gives insight on how fake news influence things like the election, and why fake news should be filtered out like Facebook  has done. This site discusses how fake of hoax headlines out preform real news in the time of heightened media usage. It is commented that it seems like these untrue stories c...

Memes / Headlines Fuel the Fire

Memes are meant to be funny, they float around social media giving short caption to pictures. however, these things that are intended to be funny could fuel fake news. People tend to believe what they see. Even if memes are not intended to imply truth, people find truth and form opinions off of them. Above are examples of some memes I see frequently on media. These are things that are available to the masses, and no matter what the intention is they are a form of fake news and they impact the opinions of citizens. These are all memes surrounding presidents because this is still a hot topic. If you someone who did not know much read these they would think President Trump is a brain dead, fascist, oompa-loompa. This may seem funny, but in impacts society.  I do not believe that many people consider memes to be a form of fake news, however after researching this topic more I think they are a very serious source of fake news.  What do you think?
